About Paulino Brener:
Paulino Brener is a Spanish teacher online and the founder of Online Teacher Summit, a virtual conference for online language teachers looking to start or improve their business online.
Time Stamped Show Notes:
03:50 – The idea about Online Teacher Summit
- He is an educator, the main thing is he teaches Spanish but in the process of also came into the social media world and was working with social media clients for a while, networking events.
- So what he found is that working with other online language teachers is that the was a void of people, first of all getting together. Teachers who work online, they are at home by themselves, they don’t have the teacher lounge, they can go into school and also there are not as many conferences or places where you can go to complete professional development. So, that’s how the idea came about of the online teacher summit.
*Paulino loves conferences, the energy that you get by meeting people and hearing new stuff and get energized with that. That’s how it came about and it also was part of his professional development-to work with these other teachers in new ideas, new ways of doing things, that’s how it all kind of started.
06:03 – Paulino’s Goal
- He did reach out to other online teachers with more experience, not only in the teaching aspect of doing it online, but also on the business aspect of being an online teacher
- His main goal was to create that space benefited himself from the expertise, but creating this space and the community that together they can improve together and move forward together
- His is always being connected with other teachers in his area by going to conferences in person. He wanted to create that experience online and kind of planting the seed for his future as professional development and becoming not just an online language teachers for people who want to learn Spanish, but helping other language teachers.
- He brought together all these experts and started working with other online teachers and helping them in growing their business in teaching online
Paulino said that he strongly believed that you can connect with a couple of people and you can get good thing, but the more you connect with a diversity of experiences of ideas, the more you can benefit from that diversity.!
09:59 – How many people involved with the summit?
- He did a mini pre-launch, he had a generic page for a while saying this is coming sign up people, he did have an opt-in from January to April.
So, the model was a free conference, free virtual summit you could watch, all the presentations the majority of them were pre-recorded and they were four to five each day and you have 48 hours to watch each recording. Right and after that it would drop and go to a membership side that you can pay for and have premium access for life.
- He collected 3,500 people in his email list in one week. His Facebook group has around 1,700 active members who engage on a continuous basis
14:37 – Paulino’s methods of marketing
- He worked with a group of people who already have their audience in that space, so most of the speakers were or are online teachers, who most of them either have two niches -one working with learners in a specific language and working with online teachers. So, most of the speakers already have an audience of online teachers or people who want to become online teachers.
- He was able to to capture some of their audiences as well because they presented and brought their audience. He had connections in the past with other online language teachers by working in different market places, connections you make by just socializing with your colleagues online and exchange ideas.
- He did create an audience in Facebook and they did run a small campaign from that audience and lookalike audience . So, he utilizes some of that that data to create an audience and then lookalike audience and one of his campaigns was targeting that audience.
18:04 – What took Paulino’s from Argentina to Minnesota?
- He is a language teacher and he came to Minnesota to teach Spanish. There is a organization called Concordia Language Villages. So, he started out at Concordia language villages and their main program are summer camps and they are full immersion.
19:12 – What are the online tools you use
- He didn’t buy any courses
- He started studying different summits and how they were done and trying to understand some of the technology they used and their funnels and all that kind of stuff
- He did have experience with some of the tools that are used like building a WordPress website
I bought a product called Digital Access Pass , it’s a plugin for WordPress that allows you to build a membership site like many other plugins, the difference is with this plugin is that you buy it once you don’t have to pay monthly and that plug-in allowed me to gate the pages or the content whenever it was not available to people anymore, the same plug-in has an affiliate feature. He used Stripe and Paypal for payments.
- He used Buffer for scheduling of posts, Canva for things related to the summit like promotions. He also used UZign , which a product to create the visuals
- Some of the tools that are used for the visual elements, scenes who create this presence of pictures of people and their profiles and stuff like that. You have to create a lot of images to promote and use inside this virtual presence.
24:48 – How did you get other teachers to participate?
- They could start figuring out the method of how to actually do a class online, but the business aspect- how to handle scheduling , how to get payment and have a system so that it is sustainable to do business online as a language teacher. That was the aspect that was most lacking in a lot of other people’s courses. so most of the focus of this conference was in that arena and that topic.
- Provide a balance and bring some topics that were beyond.
- He needed to reach out to experts outside of the online language industry to bring some of those topics like running webinars, creating online courses.
27:16 – How Paulino did the interviews & where he did the interviews and how he pushed it out there?
- We just have some live sessions to create engagement
The idea started by contacting the speakers throughout December and make arrangements. So, basically took the whole month of December to decide what technology he was going to use. what topics- like the content area and started getting the speakers and making commitments and scheduling the interviews.
He used YouTube live to record the interviews. so hangout on air. He likes Zoom better for interviews due to quality. 30 minutes, to the point, sent questions to guests ahead of time. Then, he put together profiles in February. He started promo campaign Mid March, heavy. It was a 4 month process.
32:48 – Things you would and would not do again?
- Paulino said that it took a lot of time in the planning focusing on his strengths and he thinks it worked.
- Look for support in other time zones, rather than doing it all yourself
- He put the focus on what he already had the skills that he already had the experience and that he wanted to create with the summit.
- They valued his presence and that’s one of the skills that he brought to the summit, interactions and the presence and trying to get the group together.
More important than the technology and the speakers and the content is what do you bring to the table and how you can amplify that because it’s your main strength and don’t let the technology of the content get in the way. Bring the best to the table because then you shine and that will bring a lot of benefits.
